This is not a hollowed-out pumpkin but a proper storm lantern. The curved glass shields the flame from the wind, which is what let people carry one out in any weather, along a quay or through a stable.
The kitten has simply settled in the warmest spot in the room. Two more lanterns held out at arm's length: the ghost's and Elsa's; six more hang from a bare tree.
