A scarecrow is meant to keep birds off, and this one is being used as a perch. That is true to life: crows work out quickly that a figure which never moves is no threat at all, and it has to be shifted around regularly to keep any effect.
Without his crow, the same fellow stands in the middle of a cornfield. The other autumn bird is the owl under the moon.
